May 29, 2004: Calumet, Oklahoma Anticyclonic Tornado

Please forgive my brief synopsis of this day, it has been almost three years since the chase as of this writing!

Began the day in Norman, targeting southern Kansas. We stopped for a data check in northern Oklahoma. While there, we met a couple of DFW NWS personnel there. After a brief look, we all decided to go west from there to split the difference between our two targets (westcentral OK and southwest KS), they might have been a little biased due to their long drive. Once the cells went up west of us, we pursued them. The cell we first were on weakened. We saw the cell to the southwest looking very healthly, so we wondered south and west to Watonga and then took 33 southwest to 54 south, just east of Thomas. Here is a video grab southeast of Thomas when there was a reported tornado. My guess is it is just left of the road, that is where the most intense low level rotation was.

As the supercell passed just to the north of our location, we dropped south to I-40 so we could reposition ourselves and also cross the Canadian River. We went east on I-40 to the Hinton exit. We went north on US 270 to Geary. Once arriving there, we decided to go east in Geary towards Calumet as the conditions in Geary looked bad. Later on, I realized the DOW3 went north just out of Geary and got into the mesocyclonic circulation and lost a door. The winds were in excess of 50 m/s (110 mph) at DOW3, which were stronger than the tornado itself. This area also caused the F2 damage to a house, DOW3 narrowly missed that! Anyways...we raced east towards Calumet, once arriving there, we turned north on N2740 traveling only about 1 mile where a funnel formed just west of the road. It did not form into a tornado until it was several miles east of us.

All in all, a very good chase. It was a impressively strong HP supercell with incredible inflow. However, we did miss the very photogenic tornadoes in southern Kansas, if only we had stuck to our original target! Oh well, still got a tornado!
