June 12, 2004: Mulvane, Kansas Tornadoes
Please forgive my brief synopsis of this day, it has been three years since the chase as of this writing!
Started the day in Norman, OK with several other people targeting southcentral Kansas near the Newton, McPherson area. We intercepted a weak cell just west of I-135, following it east of the interstate. This cell was pretty soft and had no organized updraft. At this point, I got an radar image on my cell phone and saw the storms developing further south. We decided to dive south to try to get to those. We got to US 77 and went south to US 400, then turning west, continuing to follow US 77. When we got to the south turn of US 77 again, we took it allowing us to slip just east of the storms core. This would position us east of the storm allowing it to come towards us. As we poked through the edge of the core, the rain free updraft appeared. The storm was beginning to show signs of low level rotation, so we found an area that had good visibility and we set up there and waited. I only had a video camera so here are some video grabs. What great back lighting (sunset) we had. The updraft was very "energetic" to say the least!
